In this lecture, Prof. Maurizio Andolfi describes how to rediscover a positive father’s presence in families as well as in therapy. Starting from a couple in love, he outlines the difficult transformation from two to three when a child arrives. Unfortunately, father is not present in child developmental theories and his “absent figure “in family life is mostly a social construct, based on old gender stereotypes. Andolfi outlines the importance for the father to break the male code and his “work addiction” and re-invent himself in a new co-parenting dimension. Listening to children voice and going back to his roots are two powerful tools to engage fathers in therapy, allowing them to enjoy fully their paternity.
